Working with mixed cart orders and multiple release dates

Downpay supports handling mixed cart orders (carts where products have different availability/release dates) but there are a few considerations to be aware of that are built into Shopify checkout and will impact mixed cart orders.

In this guide you will learn how mixed cart orders behave in Shopify and how to manage them.

Mixed cart orders overview

There are several scenarios where a cart can contain items with different availability/release dates, which Shopify tracks in separate fulfillments. We will cover two main mixed cart scenarios:

Ready to ship products and deposit products with a future release date
Deposit products with multiple release dates

Checkout

Shipping (with or without using Split Shipping)

Shipping fees are charged at checkout for both available and Downpay deposit products.

The amount charged is based on which shipping option is set in Downpay.

Taxes

Available products are taxed at checkout.

Downpay deposit product tax is deferred to the remaining balance, which is governed by a Shopify decision.

Order Overview

Fulfillments

Available products will be in Unfulfilled sections. Once fulfilled, Downpay deposit products will be in On Hold or Scheduled sections based on which date type is used for the purchase option in Downpay.

Payments

Shopify only tracks one remaining balance as a pool of funds without a breakdown or totals due for shipping, taxes, or subtotals.

Order Management

Collecting payment

In stock items are charged at checkout.

For orders with just one deferred product, simply use the Collect payment or Send invoice button or the other workflows available in Downpay.

For orders with many deferred products with varying release timelines, contact us for our partial payment beta.

Managing fulfillment

Managing fulfillment is based on whether your business ships partially ready orders or waits for all products in an order to be in stock.

Shipping partially ready orders

Simply work through processing each fulfillment found in the order as they become available (optionally using the partial payment beta feature) to partially collect amounts from the remaining balance until the entire order has been completed.

Scheduled fulfillments will release based on the date listed on their card.

On hold fulfillments can be released using the Release hold button or with Flow automation using the Release fulfillment hold action.

Shipping when all products become available

We recommend placing the Unfulfilled fulfillments On hold so that the order is displayed as On hold on your Shopify order index.

Once all items have become available, release the On hold fulfillments and process as usual.
