How deposit amounts work across currencies

When your store sells in multiple currencies, Downpay calculates the deposit based on how you have configured your purchase option.

Percentage-based deposits

When the deposit is set as a percentage of the product price, Downpay applies that percentage to whatever currency the customer is purchasing in.

For example, with a 10% deposit:

Market

Product price

Due now

Due later

United Kingdom

£100

£10

£90

United States

$200

$20

$180

The percentage stays consistent. The currency amount adjusts to match the local price.

Fixed-amount deposits

When the deposit is set as a fixed number, that number is used as the deposit amount in every currency.

For example, with a fixed deposit of 20 currency units:

Market

Product price

Due now

Due later

United Kingdom

£100

£20

£80

United States

$200

$20

$180

The deposit amount is the same number across currencies, not the same value.

Currency display in customer notifications and orders

Shopify always displays currency amounts in customer-facing notifications -- including order confirmation emails, order status pages, and invoices -- using the currency the customer paid in at checkout.

There is no way to override this to show a different currency.

The amount the customer pays is fixed in their local currency at the time the order is placed. This means the outstanding balance shown to the customer will not change as exchange rates fluctuate. The amount they owe is fixed in their local currency.

If your store's base currency is GBP and a customer pays in USD, the outstanding balance will display in USD throughout. The USD amount is fixed at checkout and will not increase or decrease based on market movements.
