Deposits not available in draft orders or create order workflow

Downpay does not work on Shopify's draft orders or Create Order page. This is a Shopify platform limitation, not a Downpay limitation. This guide explains why and walks through the supported workarounds available today.

Overview

If you are trying to collect a deposit through Shopify's draft orders or the Create Order page in your admin and the deposit option is not appearing, this is expected behaviour. Shopify does not currently support selling plans (which is how Downpay attaches a deposit) in draft orders. This applies to all Shopify plans except Shopify Plus for B2B.

Downpay works on your online storefront, where Shopify does support selling plans. The workarounds below use storefront-based flows to replicate the draft order experience until Shopify adds native support.

Why deposits don't work in draft orders

Downpay attaches a deposit to an order by including a selling_plan in the cart request at checkout. Shopify's draft order and Create Order flows do not support selling plans, so there is no way for Downpay to attach a deposit instruction through those pages. This is a Shopify platform constraint that Downpay cannot work around directly.

Workarounds

The recommended approach depends on your use case, but both methods keep orders and payments fully tracked in Shopify.

This is the fastest option for one-off or bespoke orders with many products in the cart.

Read the Checkout Links integration guide.

Downpay has a direct integration with the Checkout Links app. Checkout Links lets you generate a custom URL that takes a customer directly to checkout with a specific product and the deposit option already selected. No product page required. You can send the link via email, SMS, or DM.

Alternative: Unlisted product pages

This works well for brands who are selling only a specific product versus many.

For custom or made-to-order products, you can create an unlisted product in Shopify (hidden from your storefront and search engines) with a Downpay deposit option attached, then share the direct Product page URL with your customer.
